Description

The original Hacienda de Tequisquiapan was created by a grant from Don Luis de Velazco, then Viceroy of New Spain, conceded to Alonso de Estrada y Lope de Sosa, and then in 1692 ownership transferred to the present family as Hacienda Grande de Tequisquiapan.

The Hacienda was partially destroyed during the 1910 Revolutionary Period but was completely restored in 1920. Before the Mexican Revolution of 1910, the hacienda owned 7000 Hectareas. This land had once been part of a larger land holding of La Malinche, infamous indigenous mistress of conquistador Hernan Cortes.

Every room inside the hacienda is a walk into the past, full of mementos, photographs, paintings and spaces that seem caught up in timeless architectural mexican history. The dining room is a fine example of the french style so favoured during the presidency of Porfirio Diaz (late 19th C) with beautiful stained glass windows overlooking the exterior gardens. There are 17 separate and interconecting bedrooms and three apartment suites. It is excellent for family gatherings to spend those memorable weekends and summer vacations while horse back riding enjoying outdoor activities.

Since 1935 the hacienda is famous for its fighting bulls (toros de lidia) , therefore, there are heads preserved in honor of their performances in the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City and proudly displayed around the house. Among them, AZUCARERO who was fought by Manolo Ramos and ACEITUNO, one of the heads in the dining room, who fought Manolo Martinez in what is refered to as one of his greatest fights, is also cast in bronze over the main entrance of the Monumental Plaza de Toros Mexico.

The Hacienda is of Quadrangle Andaluzian style with all living / dining quarters, the kitchen, the 10 bedrooms and service quarters leading onto the surround arcada or the interior garden / fountain. From this interior space one can exit to the huerta, pool and garden, and the caballerizas (6).
