Haciendas de Mexico and Ranchos are
survivors of historic fate that began with the arrival of
the explorer Spaniards in 1524 to what became known then as
New Spain and developed as personal empires before and
after the Mexican Independence in 1810 until the Mexican Revolution of 1910 and the promulgation of the Constitution
of 1917 with all the agrarian laws which initiated the
partition of all the great landholdings. Each of these
remaining icons possesses its own special historic
relationship to the Land, the People—their social life and
their politics-- and the Spirit of Mexico, which is
celebrating its 200 Independence Anniversary and 100
Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution.
The Mexican Estate Hacienda was
originally not only the family home for Spanish Nobles but
also a workplace, a place of leisure and of religion—in
short, a closed and self-sufficient rural world in which the
landowners held authority over every facet of daily life of
the workers engaged in agricultural and/or livestock
production.
The most glorious of these architectural
labyrinths of structures and special forms was begun near
San Miguel de Allende / Dolores Hildago / San Filipe, in the
state of Guanajuato, in the 1500´s and became known as the
Hacienda San Diego del Jaral de Berrio. The first Marques
del Jaral de Berrio extended the size of the hacienda from
the State of Durango to near the City of Mexico so that his
cattle could graze freely from the Valle of Mexico to the
far north, known as Nueva Viscaya (Espana), without passing
through territory not his own.
This quintessential remnant of this
Period of Hacendados (land owners) is presently being
restored to its grandeur under the leadership of Architecto
Roberto Burillo, a resident of San Miguel de Allende,
Guanajuato.
Although there were numerous Haciendas
established throughout New Spain for the cultivation and
growth of cattle and grains, surviving ones of the southern
region of Yucatan –such as Hacienda Katanchul and Hacienda
San Antonio Chantuac—became more well known for the growth
and production of henequen (sisal). But, it was in the
central and northern regions of the country where the grand
haciendas were created that became the legendary Haciendas
de Mexico.
Our selection of Haciendas, Ranchos and
Equestrian Properties are all about Mexican history and the
Preservation of these architectural legacies. These
properties should be considered personal investments of
timeless endurance that will enhance ones own future legacy.
It is ones opportunity to engage in a lifestyle of old world
tradition, elegance and romance.
